The professors of Hogwarts notoriously saw midnight corridor patrol duty as a grumble-worthy assignment to be passed on whenever possible. For Herbology professor Neville Longbottom, however, it was these nights that he looked forward to the most.

Around 11:30, he would get the Prefect reports from Gryffindor and Hufflepuff, make his own sweep of the dark, silent corridors, then make his way into the dungeons where he would seek out the painting of a fruit bowl and tickle the skin of the pear.

He would spend the rest of his night, until just past four when he would make another round of the castle, in the kitchens with Dobby.

That night when he walked in, he was greeted as he always was, with an enthusiastic, “Hello, Professor Longbottom, sir!”

He smiled. “Hello, Dobby.”

“Pancakes, Professor Longbottom, sir?”

“You know me too well, Dobby.”

Dobby grinned widely, then turned toward the table where Neville usually sat. “Anything else for you, Professor Lovegood, miss?”

He was surprised to see Luna sitting in the seat opposite his normal spot with her own stack of pancakes in front of her, and she smiled pleasantly at him before shaking her head politely at Dobby.

“You’ve discovered my secret,” she says and he grins, taking the seat across from her.

“More accurately, I share it. I suppose you have duty tonight as well?”

She nodded. “My first.”

He laughed. “And skiving off already. I’m impressed. It took me ages to realize that I didn’t have to spend this time counting the stones in the corridor floors.”

“How many?”

“Nearly four thousand in the Entrance Hall alone.” He eyed her plate, hoping that Dobby would return soon with his. “You come for the pancakes as well, then?”

“The most I ever have time for in the mornings is a bit of toast and some pumpkin juice. I have them every morning when I’m at home.” Her voice was wistful. As Dobby set Neville’s plate in front of him, she said, “You don’t seem very worried that we’ll miss something with both of us here.”

He swallowed a bite, then grinned at her again. “I’m not.” Behind him, the door to the kitchens opened again and he heard a put-out ‘Bugger!’ “We’re in a castle full of teenagers. I make more busts than the rest of the professors combined.”
