Draco scowled at the floor as he was hauled into Filch’s office by his arm for the second time that week. Coming back to Hogwarts to finish his education was proving to be a mistake, as the professors and other students continued to believe that his every breath had evil intentions.

This time, he was being blamed for an explosion in the trophy room that he was sure Peeves was behind, but he couldn’t prove it, and his proximity to the scene of the crime had been too much for the cranky groundskeeper to pass up.

Filch shoved him down into the chair opposite his desk and walked around to the other side, a better vantage point to stare at Draco menacingly. “So, boy, what are we going to do with you this time?”

Draco managed to hold back the eye roll, instead feigning thought. He splayed out his fingers one at a time, pretending to count. “Well, I’ve already got detention every night through next…Thursday. How about we start there?”

The groundskeeper growled. “How about we start with some respect, you insolent-” Filch was cut off abruptly by another explosion, followed quickly by the distinct smell of Dungbomb. Filch’s fists clenched. “Oh, bleeding hell.” Then he was out the door, Draco’s insolence temporarily forgotten.

Draco grabbed his bag, ready to clear out in the opposite direction when Luna Lovegood appeared in the doorway, grinning pleasantly. “It worked.”

He gaped at her. “You did that?” She nodded, then waved her hand for him to follow her. They made their way to the Entrance Hall. “For me?” Another nod. “Why?”

“We’re friends,” she said simply.

“We are?” he asked incredulously, and she merely continued to smile.

“Well, we’re going to be. One of us just had to take the first step.”
