Neville had been in love with Ginny Weasley for as long as he could remember.

Okay, so maybe that was a bit of an exaggeration, but to his mind, every moment he had to watch her with Harry felt like the world was going in slow motion.

It was this fact that had him curled up on a red leather couch in the Room of Requirement, staring at the fire and trying desperately to forget the image of Ginny sitting on Harry’s lap in the Gryffindor Commons.

The Room of Requirement had become quite the hiding place for him since he’d come back to repeat his last year of school. The first time he’d made the journey to the seventh floor corridor, he’d expected to find a pile of ash and ruin, but soon found that the Room was far more resilient than they’d ever known. There had been no evidence of the Fiend Fyre massacre, only the red leather couch positioned in front of a roaring fire.

He didn’t look up when the door to the Room of Requirement opened and another person stepped inside, pushing the door quietly closed. Instead, he pushed himself up on one arm, allowing her to sit, then relaxed again, using her lap as a pillow.

Luna ran soft fingers through his hair and he sighed. He’d been coming to the Room for quite a while the first time Luna stumbled upon him, in search of a haven of her own. And he understood all too well. Being a “war hero” wasn’t so much different than being a “prisoner of war.” Either way, you got far more attention than you deserved for things that happened that you couldn’t control.

At first, they’d talked. About her father, about Ginny, about things neither of them had ever considered discussing with anyone else. But now, they met nearly every night and sat this way in silence, and the silence was just as comforting as the talking had been. Perhaps more.

That night, Luna said, as she’d said before, “She’s not worth this.”

Usually, when she said this, he didn’t reply. He wasn’t sure if this was because he believed vehemently that it wasn’t true, or because he knew deep down that she was right. This time, however, he asked, “Why not?”

“Because she’s not yours.” Luna said it like it was the most obvious thing in the world, and it probably was. All the same, his stomach turned at hearing the words uttered allowed. “It’s no use hurting over someone who isn’t yours when there’s someone so close who is.”

That night, before she left, she kissed him on the cheek as she always did, but she lingered a second longer before telling him ‘good night’ and walking out.

That night, walking back into Gryffindor Tower, it still pained him to see Ginny curled up against Harry’s side, but it was different pain. That night, he still loved Ginny Weasley, but he knew he didn’t have to.
